Why Every NHL Fan Should Have an NHL Jersey

Sport jerseys are one item of clothing that are never out of fashion. It is because of this fundamental reason that NHL jerseys are always available and making huge sales, no matter what the season. In case you are a hockey fan, but do not own even a single NHL jersey, then it is high time that you went out and bought yourself one. Do not worry about being a fashion criminal either, for a sport jersey makes the ultimate fashion statement-that of loyalty and sporting spirit-no matter where in the world you are.

You can lay hands on the NHL jersey of your favorite hockey team at your local sporting goods, hockey or sporting memorabilia and collectibles store. NHL jerseys that you buy from good stores do not come cheap, especially if they also carry the brand logo of a multinational sports brand like Nike or Adidas. But do not worry, for there are not one, but two other options open to you in case you do not want to shell out a fortune on your NHL jersey.

The first option is that you get your jersey custom made and stitched by a professional jersey maker. Apart from being cheaper than a branded jersey in most cases, a custom made jersey increases the design options of your sporting attire by a number of times. You can easily decide on the detailing, design and quality of your NHL jersey and the design options are almost infinite provided your head is full of ideas. You should be able to locate an NHL jersey maker in your locality or town and get started with designing your own collection of NHL jerseys.

If you are one of those people who do not have the patience for a custom made jersey or want to buy an item off the shelf for any other reason, then the best place to buy your NHL jerseys is online. There are a large number of online stores that carry loads and loads of different NHL jerseys. The best part is that most online stores will charge you much lesser for your jersey than a brick and mortar store. On the other hand, the variety found online far surpasses what any regular store would be able to provide you. In case you are unable to find a professional jersey maker in your town, but are desperate to get your New York Rangers jersey printed with your name or a number of your choice, then you can also find a number of good sporting apparel web sites that make customized jerseys.

Being dressed up in an NHL hockey jersey is the best way of turning up for a hockey match. Your jersey lets everyone know all about your inclination and support for your favorite team. At the same time, you manage to give your favorite hockey team a boost in the arm when required by wearing their colors and letting them know that you support them no matter what. Another advantage of wearing your NHL jersey to a match is that you stand out as a beacon for other supporters of your team, who will come and congregate near you. In no time at all, you will find that your own cheer leading group in action.

History of the NHL Jersey

The history of the NHL jersey dates back almost 100 years. With it's long sleeves, large numbers and stunning logos, the hockey jersey has long been a statement of pride for hockey fans of all ages. NHL fans buy NHL gear including jerseys and wear them to games and at home to show their support for their local team. While all 30 NHL teams now have home, away and sometimes alternate jerseys to wear and sell, that was not always the case.

The NHL started in 1917 with five teams. Their uniforms were originally made of heavy wools and cottons to keep players warm and they were not very appealing. For the first decade of league play, teams only had one uniform they wore for both home and away games.

The main characteristics of their NHL jerseys were long sleeves and stripes. The Toronto Arenas were the only team to sport a solid blue jersey with white trim.

The league slowly made its way to the United States in 1924. The first team in the states was the Boston Bruins. The NHL jerseys associated with this team was a solid brown color with gold trim. At this time, the Hamilton Tigers wore an NHL jersey with thin lines of black and gold on their sleeves.

In 1927-28, the Toronto Maple Leafs unveiled a new blue-and-white logo that included a heavily striped jersey for home games and a rather simple white jersey with a blue leaf logo for away games.

As the 1930s rolled around, ultra-skinny lines of alternating color were seen in teams, such as the Chicago Black Hawks and the Detroit Falcons. Stars highlighted the NHL jerseys of the New York Americans red, white and blue color scheme.

During the 1940s, the New York/ Brooklyn Americans folded and the NHL was reduced to only six teams. It is now that we see the emergence of more and more colored pants, as well as a variety of home and away NHL jerseys.

In 1950, the Black Hawks moved from a barber pole appearance in their black NHL jerseys to a red jersey with an Indian head on front. This is the start of the official NHL merchandise we see associated with the Black Hawks of today. It was in 1955 that the Bruins became the first team to introduce the color gold in their NHL jerseys.

In 1951, the NHL mandated white jerseys at home getting the Rangers to create a new uniform. However, that changed four years later, and colored uniforms became home jerseys until 1970, when it changed again. It would change several times during the next few decades.

The league expanded in 1967 to 12 teams and kept adding teams every few years until the mid-1970s, leading to more styles and more colors being added to the NHL collection to the joy of fans who buy NHL gear in support of their team.

Names first appeared on the back of jerseys in 1971, but only home teams wore them. However, by 1978, all teams were wearing names on the backs of the jerseys. The Toronto Maple Leafs were the last team to conform, but did so with protest. The team put white letters on the white jerseys and blue letters on the blue jerseys, because the team's owner, Howard Ballard, feared he would lose revenue from game programs if fans knew the names of players.

The Montreal Canadians wore three different jerseys during the 1946 season. Third jerseys didn't get used again until 1995 when the league added the idea of alternate jerseys to help bring in profits. Most of the teams have used a third jersey at one time or another since then, and the Canadians remained pioneers by using five jerseys in the 2008-09 season in honor of their centennial celebration. The NHL jersey is just one example of showing team support and pride when fans buy NHL gear of their favorite team.

Why Getting a Custom Made NHL Hockey Jersey is a Good Idea

The NHL hockey jersey, apart from being witness to the colorful unfolding of our favorite hockey league's history, is also one of the most popular pieces of sports merchandise being sold today. Almost every sporting and sport memorabilia and collectibles store worth its salt carries a variety of NHL memorabilia, especially NHL hockey jerseys. However, at times it happens that in spite of the huge glut of NHL hockey jerseys in the market, you might not be able to find the exact jersey that you are looking for.

This might be because you are in search for an antique jersey that is no longer very popular amongst NHL fans today. Another reason could be that you do not like the detailing on the jerseys being sold, because one or more small, yet crucial details are missing from the jerseys. One more reason why buying NHL hockey jerseys might become a problem could be because of the prohibitively high prices that some jerseys come with, especially if they carry brand names and logos of any major sporting brand in the world.

One great idea that comes to everyone's rescue when it comes to situations like those presented above is that of getting custom made NHL hockey jerseys. All the problems mentioned above can easily solve themselves when you start getting your jerseys custom made. There are a large number of professional jersey makers, who can create the perfect NHL jersey for you, complete with all the large and small details and that too for a lesser price than what you would have to pay for a model with a brand icon and lesser details.

Going to a custom jersey maker is also a good idea if you have given up on finding the jersey you are looking for because of its unavailability in all kinds of stores. A good custom jersey maker will be able to create a jersey for you even if it is what your favorite team was wearing thirty years before or if it belongs to a team that is not playing league hockey anymore. On top of this, most jersey makers should be able to put in all the little details that you want on your favorite jersey.

Another good thing that a custom jersey maker might be able to do is put your name on your NHL jersey, so that you actually feel like you are a part of your favorite hockey team when you wear it. So if you are really serious about your NHL hockey jerseys, then locating a good jersey maker who can create all kinds of NHL hockey jerseys is a good idea. In case you can't find one in your town or city, then do not despair, because there are a number of good online jersey making companies that let you customize and design your jersey on their web pages and later on make and ship that jersey to you. Wearing a jersey that you have designed yourself will increase the pleasure that you get from sporting your favorite team's colors, so why not go and locate a good jersey maker asap?
